Artist Statement

Svetlana Turov creates Fiber Fine Art, a unique art form that bridges the gap between painting and sculpture. Her work explores the intersection of heritage and innovation, reimagining traditional felt-making techniques passed down through generations. She transforms natural fibers like wool and silk into strong, durable artworks that evoke the power and serenity of the natural world.

Inspired by family traditions and her deep connection to nature, she employs techniques like Nuno felting, which allows her to fuse different natural materials and create layered, textured surfaces that resemble paintings yet possess a sculptural, almost three-dimensional quality. Her subject matter often focuses on the ocean, Niagara Falls, and other natural wonders, rendered in a style that balances realism with a touch of the ethereal.

She draws inspiration from diverse artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, and performing arts, allowing her to infuse her felt pieces with a unique perspective. She aims to transcend the traditional boundaries of fiber art, offering viewers a fresh and captivating experience.

Her ongoing series of limited-edition books on Fiber Fine Art documents her creative process, techniques, and philosophy. During the development of her monograph, she collaborated with experts from Hermitage State Museum, whose cultural insights highlight the deep historical roots and evolving tradition of felt-making. Several copies of this book are also preserved in the Hermitage Academic Library.

One of her current works continues this artistic exploration through the recreation of elements from the ancient Pazyryk felted carpet. By artistically interpreting its imagery on an original scale, she connects ancestral artistry with contemporary Fine Art, showing how enduring forms of ancient creativity can find new meaning in the present.
